Astrology Glossary

A comprehensive reference guide to astrological terminology. Whether you are a beginner learning the basics or an experienced enthusiast seeking precise definitions, this glossary covers 80+ essential terms from fundamental concepts to advanced astrological techniques.

A

Ascendant (Rising Sign)
The zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. The Ascendant represents your outward personality, physical appearance tendencies, and the lens through which you view the world. It changes approximately every two hours, making exact birth time essential for its calculation. Many professional astrologers consider the Ascendant as important as the Sun sign for daily predictions. Calculate yours with our Birth Chart Calculator.
Aspect
A specific angular relationship between two planets or points in a chart, measured in degrees along the ecliptic. The five major aspects are conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°), and opposition (180°). Aspects describe how planetary energies interact — harmoniously, with tension, or with intensified focus.
Astrology
The study of correlations between celestial positions and patterns in human experience. Astrology uses precise astronomical data as its foundation and applies symbolic interpretation drawn from thousands of years of observation and tradition to provide insights into personality, timing, and life themes.
Air Signs
The three zodiac signs associated with the Air element: Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. Air signs are characterized by intellectual curiosity, communication skills, social orientation, and abstract thinking. They process life primarily through ideas and relationships.

B

Birth Chart (Natal Chart)
A map of the sky at the exact moment and location of a person's birth, showing the positions of the Sun, Moon, and all planets across the zodiac signs and astrological houses. The birth chart is the most fundamental tool in astrology, serving as a unique cosmic fingerprint that reveals personality traits, life themes, and potential. Generate yours at our Birth Chart page.
Big Three
The three most influential placements in a birth chart: the Sun sign (core identity), Moon sign (emotional nature), and Rising sign/Ascendant (outward personality). Together, the Big Three provide the most essential overview of a person's astrological identity.

C

Cardinal Signs
The four zodiac signs that initiate each season: Aries (spring), Cancer (summer), Libra (autumn), and Capricorn (winter). Cardinal signs are natural leaders and initiators, characterized by ambition, drive, and the ability to start new projects and directions.
Conjunction
An aspect formed when two planets occupy the same degree (or within a few degrees) of the zodiac. Conjunctions merge and intensify the energies of both planets involved, creating a powerful focal point in the chart. The nature of a conjunction depends on the planets involved — a Venus-Jupiter conjunction is typically fortunate, while a Mars-Saturn conjunction can indicate disciplined but frustrated energy.
Composite Chart
A chart created by calculating the midpoints between two people's planetary positions, representing the relationship itself as an entity. Unlike synastry (which compares two individual charts), a composite chart describes the shared identity and purpose of the relationship.
Cusp
The boundary line between two zodiac signs or two astrological houses. Being "born on the cusp" means your Sun was very close to a sign boundary, though astronomically you are always in one sign or the other. House cusps define where each house begins in your chart.

D

Decan (Decanate)
Each zodiac sign is divided into three 10-degree segments called decans, each modifying the sign's expression. The first decan (0-10°) is the purest expression of the sign, the second decan (10-20°) blends in the next sign of the same element, and the third decan (20-30°) incorporates the third sign of the element.
Descendant
The point directly opposite the Ascendant, marking the cusp of the 7th House. The Descendant represents the qualities you seek in partners and the dynamics you attract in one-on-one relationships. It is always in the zodiac sign opposite your Rising sign.
Dignity
A system describing how well a planet functions in a particular zodiac sign. A planet in its domicile (ruling sign) or exaltation operates with strength and ease, while a planet in its detriment or fall faces challenges in expressing its energy naturally.
Direct Motion
The normal forward movement of a planet through the zodiac, as opposed to retrograde (apparent backward) motion. When a planet "stations direct" after a retrograde period, the themes it governs begin moving forward again with renewed clarity.

E

Earth Signs
The three zodiac signs associated with the Earth element: Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. Earth signs are practical, sensual, grounded, and stability-oriented. They excel at building tangible results and value material security, reliability, and concrete achievement.
Eclipse
A supercharged New Moon (solar eclipse) or Full Moon (lunar eclipse) that occurs when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align along the lunar nodes. Eclipses are among the most powerful astrological events, often triggering significant life changes, revelations, and turning points. Eclipse effects can be felt for weeks before and after the actual event.
Ephemeris
A table or database listing the precise astronomical positions of celestial bodies at regular intervals. The Swiss Ephemeris, used by Constellation Mystique, is the industry standard for professional astrological calculations, providing planetary positions accurate to within arc-seconds.
Exaltation
A zodiac sign where a planet expresses its energy with particular strength and refinement. For example, the Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Capricorn, Jupiter in Cancer, and Saturn in Libra.

F

Fire Signs
The three zodiac signs associated with the Fire element: Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Fire signs are passionate, energetic, enthusiastic, and action-oriented. They lead with inspiration, courage, and creative vision, though they can also be impulsive and impatient.
Fixed Signs
The four zodiac signs that fall in the middle of each season: Taurus (spring), Leo (summer), Scorpio (autumn), and Aquarius (winter). Fixed signs are determined, persistent, and resistant to change. They excel at sustaining projects and maintaining focus but can struggle with flexibility and stubbornness.
Full Moon
The lunar phase when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun, appearing fully illuminated from Earth. Astrologically, the Full Moon represents culmination, illumination, emotional intensity, and the harvest of efforts begun at the previous New Moon. It is a time for reaping results, gaining clarity, and releasing what no longer serves you.

G

Grand Cross
A rare aspect pattern formed by four planets arranged in a cross, creating two oppositions and four squares. A Grand Cross represents intense dynamic tension in multiple life areas simultaneously, driving significant growth through challenge and requiring the integration of four competing energies.
Grand Trine
An aspect pattern formed by three planets approximately 120° apart, creating an equilateral triangle in the chart. A Grand Trine represents exceptional natural talent and ease in the element involved (Fire, Earth, Air, or Water), though its gifts can be taken for granted without conscious development.

H

Horoscope
In modern usage, a horoscope refers to an astrological forecast based on the current positions of planets relative to a particular zodiac sign. Technically, "horoscope" (meaning "hour watcher" in Greek) originally referred to the Ascendant degree, and by extension, the entire birth chart. Today it is commonly used to describe daily, weekly, or monthly astrological predictions. Read yours on our Daily Horoscope page.
Houses (Astrological)
The 12 divisions of the birth chart, each governing specific life areas. Houses are determined by the exact birth time and location. The 1st House begins at the Ascendant and proceeds counterclockwise. Each house represents a domain of life experience where planetary energies operate. Learn more in our First House Deep Analysis.

I

IC (Imum Coeli)
The lowest point of the birth chart, marking the cusp of the 4th House. The IC represents your deepest roots, family heritage, emotional foundation, home environment, and private inner world. It is directly opposite the Midheaven (MC).
Intercepted Sign
A zodiac sign that is entirely contained within a single house without appearing on any house cusp. Intercepted signs (and any planets within them) can represent energies that are less accessible or require more conscious effort to integrate into your life expression.

J

Jupiter
The largest planet in our solar system, representing growth, expansion, abundance, wisdom, higher learning, travel, and philosophical exploration in astrology. Jupiter's sign and house placement in your chart reveal where you experience natural luck and where you seek meaning and growth. Jupiter takes about 12 years to orbit the Sun, spending roughly one year in each zodiac sign.

K

Kite
An aspect pattern combining a Grand Trine with an opposition, creating a kite-like shape. The opposition adds dynamic tension and a focal point to the Grand Trine's natural ease, directing its talents toward specific goals and achievements. A Kite pattern often indicates exceptional potential when its energies are consciously channeled.

L

Lunar Nodes (North Node & South Node)
The two points where the Moon's orbital path crosses the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path). The North Node represents your soul's growth direction, life purpose, and qualities you are developing. The South Node represents your comfort zone, past-life skills, and patterns you are releasing. The Nodes always occupy opposite signs and take about 18.6 years to complete a full cycle.
Lunar Return
The moment each month when the transiting Moon returns to the exact zodiac position it occupied in your birth chart. A lunar return chart, cast for this moment, describes the emotional themes and domestic patterns for the coming month.

M

Mars
The planet of action, desire, energy, assertion, and courage. Mars represents how you pursue goals, express anger, and channel physical and sexual energy. Its sign placement describes your drive style, and its house placement shows where you direct your most assertive efforts. Mars takes about two years to orbit the Sun.
Mercury
The planet of communication, thought, learning, and information exchange. Mercury governs how you think, speak, write, and process information. It also rules short-distance travel, technology, and commerce. Mercury orbits the Sun in about 88 days and goes retrograde approximately three times per year.
Midheaven (MC / Medium Coeli)
The highest point of the birth chart, marking the cusp of the 10th House. The Midheaven represents your career path, public reputation, life ambitions, and the legacy you seek to build. Its zodiac sign describes the qualities you project professionally and the career path most aligned with your chart.
Moon
The Earth's natural satellite, representing emotions, instincts, subconscious patterns, nurturing needs, and the inner self in astrology. The Moon sign is considered one of the most important chart placements, revealing your emotional intelligence style and deepest comfort needs. The Moon changes zodiac signs approximately every 2.5 days. Calculate your Moon sign with our Moon Sign Calculator.
Mutable Signs
The four zodiac signs that end each season: Gemini (spring), Virgo (summer), Sagittarius (autumn), and Pisces (winter). Mutable signs are adaptable, flexible, communicative, and oriented toward change and transition. They excel at adjusting to new circumstances but can struggle with consistency and follow-through.

N

Natal Chart
See Birth Chart. The term "natal" comes from the Latin word for "birth," emphasizing that this chart captures the celestial configuration at the moment of a person's entry into the world.
Neptune
The planet of dreams, imagination, spirituality, compassion, illusion, and transcendence. Neptune dissolves boundaries and connects us to the collective unconscious, artistic inspiration, and spiritual longing. Its influence can manifest as creative genius, spiritual depth, or escapism and confusion. Neptune takes about 165 years to orbit the Sun, spending roughly 14 years in each zodiac sign.
New Moon
The lunar phase when the Moon is conjunct the Sun (at the same zodiac degree), appearing dark from Earth. Astrologically, the New Moon represents new beginnings, setting intentions, planting seeds, and fresh starts. It is the ideal time to initiate new projects and establish goals for the coming lunar cycle.

O

Opposition
An aspect formed when two planets are approximately 180° apart (opposite each other in the zodiac). Oppositions create awareness through polarity and tension, often manifesting as projection or the need to balance two competing energies. While challenging, oppositions promote growth through integration and the development of perspective.
Orb
The degree of allowance given when determining whether two planets are in aspect. For example, if a trine requires exactly 120° but an orb of 8° is used, any angular relationship between 112° and 128° would qualify as a trine. Tighter orbs indicate stronger, more exact aspects.

P

Pluto
The planet of transformation, power, death and rebirth, and deep psychological processes. Pluto's influence is intense and transformative, often bringing experiences that fundamentally alter your understanding of yourself and life. It takes about 248 years to orbit the Sun, spending 12-31 years in each sign, making its generational influence profound.
Progression (Secondary)
A predictive technique where each day after birth symbolically represents one year of life. Progressed charts reveal internal psychological evolution and the unfolding of the birth chart's potential over time. Unlike transits (which describe external events), progressions describe inner development and maturation.

Q

Quincunx (Inconjunct)
A minor aspect formed when two planets are approximately 150° apart. The quincunx connects signs that share no element or quality, creating an awkward, adjusting energy. It often indicates areas of life requiring constant adaptation and can manifest as health issues, chronic adjustments, or the need to integrate seemingly incompatible parts of your life.

R

Retrograde
The apparent backward movement of a planet through the zodiac as seen from Earth. This optical illusion occurs due to differences in orbital speeds. Astrologically, retrograde periods invite review, revision, and reassessment of the themes governed by the retrograding planet. Mercury retrograde (communication and technology) is the most widely discussed, but all planets except the Sun and Moon experience retrograde periods.
Rising Sign
See Ascendant. The Rising sign is so named because it is the zodiac sign that was literally "rising" on the eastern horizon at the time of birth.
Ruler (Planetary)
Each zodiac sign has a ruling planet that has a natural affinity with its energy: Aries/Mars, Taurus/Venus, Gemini/Mercury, Cancer/Moon, Leo/Sun, Virgo/Mercury, Libra/Venus, Scorpio/Pluto, Sagittarius/Jupiter, Capricorn/Saturn, Aquarius/Uranus, Pisces/Neptune. The sign's ruler has special significance in chart interpretation.

S

Saturn
The planet of discipline, responsibility, structure, limitation, and mastery. Saturn represents where you face challenges, must work hardest, and ultimately build lasting achievement. Its approximately 29.5-year orbit creates the famous "Saturn Return" around ages 28-30 and 57-60 — major life transitions marked by maturation and taking greater responsibility for your path.
Saturn Return
The transit occurring approximately every 29.5 years when Saturn returns to the exact zodiac position it occupied at your birth. The first Saturn Return (ages 28-30) marks the transition from youth to adulthood, often bringing career evaluations, relationship milestones, and a deeper sense of purpose. It is considered one of astrology's most significant life transitions.
Sextile
An aspect formed when two planets are approximately 60° apart. Sextiles represent harmonious opportunities that require conscious activation — they offer potential advantages but must be actively pursued. They connect signs of compatible elements (Fire-Air or Earth-Water).
Solar Return
A chart cast for the exact moment the transiting Sun returns to its natal position each year, which occurs near your birthday. The solar return chart provides a roadmap of themes, opportunities, and challenges for the year ahead, with the Ascendant and house placements being particularly significant.
Square
An aspect formed when two planets are approximately 90° apart. Squares create dynamic tension, friction, and challenge that ultimately drive growth and action. They represent areas where effort is required but where the most significant personal development occurs. Squares connect signs of the same quality (Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable).
Stellium
A concentration of three or more planets in the same zodiac sign or astrological house. A stellium creates an intense focus of energy in that sign/house's domain, making those themes a dominant force in the person's life. Stelliums often indicate areas of exceptional talent, obsessive interest, or significant life emphasis.
Sun
The center of our solar system, representing core identity, ego, life purpose, vitality, and creative self-expression in astrology. Your Sun sign (determined by your birth date) is the most commonly known astrological placement and describes the fundamental qualities you are developing and expressing throughout your life.
Synastry
The astrological technique of comparing two birth charts to analyze relationship compatibility and dynamics. Synastry examines the aspects between one person's planets and the other's, revealing areas of harmony, attraction, challenge, and growth within the partnership. Explore relationship dynamics with our Compatibility Calculator.

T

Transit
The current movement of a planet through the zodiac as it forms aspects to positions in your natal chart. Transits are the primary technique for timing predictions, describing the cosmic influences active in your life at any given time. Fast transits (Moon, Mercury) create brief effects; slow transits (Saturn, Pluto) produce major life themes lasting months or years.
Trine
An aspect formed when two planets are approximately 120° apart. Trines represent natural harmony, talent, and ease between the planets involved. They flow effortlessly and often indicate gifts that come so naturally they can be taken for granted. Trines connect signs of the same element.
T-Square
An aspect pattern formed by two planets in opposition with a third planet squaring both, creating a T-shape. The planet at the apex of the T-Square receives intense pressure and becomes a critical focal point for resolving the tension between the opposing planets. T-Squares are powerful drivers of achievement and action.

U

Uranus
The planet of revolution, innovation, sudden change, individuality, and liberation. Uranus breaks established patterns and introduces the unexpected, driving technological advancement, social reform, and personal awakening. It takes about 84 years to orbit the Sun, spending roughly 7 years in each zodiac sign, and its transits often coincide with sudden, life-altering changes.

V

Venus
The planet of love, beauty, pleasure, values, and relationships. Venus describes how you express and receive affection, your aesthetic sensibilities, and what you find beautiful and worthwhile. Its sign placement reveals your love language, while its house placement shows where you seek harmony and pleasure. Venus orbits the Sun in about 225 days.
Void-of-Course Moon
A period when the Moon has made its last major aspect in its current sign but has not yet entered the next sign. During void-of-course periods (which can last from minutes to over a day), activities initiated are considered less likely to produce intended results. Many astrologers advise against starting important new ventures during these periods.

W

Water Signs
The three zodiac signs associated with the Water element: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Water signs are emotional, intuitive, psychologically deep, and empathetic. They navigate life primarily through feeling and instinct, possessing natural sensitivity to the emotional undercurrents in any situation.
Whole Sign Houses
One of the oldest house systems in astrology, where each house corresponds exactly to one zodiac sign, starting from the Rising sign. The entire sign containing the Ascendant becomes the 1st House, the next sign becomes the 2nd House, and so on. This system has experienced a significant revival in modern practice due to its simplicity and historical pedigree.

Z

Zodiac
The band of sky approximately 8° on either side of the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent annual path) through which the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to travel. In Western astrology, the zodiac is divided into 12 equal 30° signs starting at the vernal equinox point (0° Aries). The word "zodiac" comes from the Greek "zodiakos kyklos," meaning "circle of animals."
Zodiac Compatibility
The study of how different zodiac signs interact in relationships, considering element harmony (Fire-Air, Earth-Water), quality dynamics (Cardinal-Fixed-Mutable), and specific sign pairings. While Sun sign compatibility provides a starting point, comprehensive relationship analysis requires examining Moon signs, Venus placements, and full chart synastry. Explore your compatibility with our Compatibility Calculator.
